Showreels of your previous work are a great way to show casting your range and ability. But.. what do you do if you're early in your career and haven't booked any jobs yet?

Self-tapes are a great way to get started, especially if you're starting out and don't yet have professional footage to cut into a showreel. At a basic level, all you need is a blank wall, a well-lit room, a phone to record the video, and someone to read the other character's lines for you. It's a great way to show some different characters if you haven't booked any work yet, or if you haven't yet booked work for the characters you want to attract.

There is, however, a noticeable gap in quality between self-tapes and professionally made scenes. There's only so much you can do as an actor when you're literally up against the wall. You're all but completely removed from the world you're trying to act in, and it requires a lot of imagination.
